Serval - The Mysterious Cat of Africa
The serval is a beautiful and mysterious cat that is native to Africa. This majestic predator attracts attention not only by its appearance, but also by its unique behaviour. In this article, we will find out where the serval comes from, how it was discovered, whether it is suitable for breeding as a pet, and what conditions need to be provided when breeding this charmingly wild cat.

Servals (Leptailurus serval) are wild-caught felines found throughout sub-Saharan Africa. Their natural range extends from the Sahara to the southern part of South Africa. These cats are usually associated with open, grassy areas, wetlands and bushy areas. They are excellent hunters, specialising in hunting birds and small mammals.

Servals have been known to humans for centuries, but their first scientific descriptions date back to the 16th century, when European explorers began to explore Africa. However, as far back as ancient Egypt, servals were respected and sometimes kept as pets due to their ability to hunt pests such as rats and snakes.
The breeding of servals as pets is controversial and in many places is prohibited or requires special permits. There are several reasons why servals are not typical pets.
Servals retain many wild instincts, which can be problematic in the home. They are excellent hunters and often try to hunt birds or small pets. Servals need plenty of space to run and explore. Confining them in a small cage is inappropriate and leads to stress. Their diet is specific and includes meat. Providing them with adequate food can be difficult.  Servals live relatively long lives, often up to 20 years or more. This is a commitment for many years.
However, if someone is interested in breeding servals and is specially qualified to do so, they must provide the right conditions. Servals need plenty of space. If breeding in an open area, a fence of sufficient height and escape-proofing must be provided. These cats need shelter from bad weather and a place to hide. Servals need to be fed a suitable meat diet, which can include meat, chicken and specialist carnivore cat food. It is important to provide the serval with appropriate toys and stimulation to maintain its mental health. Regular veterinary care is essential for the serval's health.

Servals are amazing wild cats, but due to their wild instincts and specific needs, breeding them as pets is a responsibility that requires advanced knowledge and resources. Always comply with local laws and regulations regarding the ownership of servals or other exotic animals.
