White-bellied hedgehog
The white-bellied hedgehog, known scientifically as Atelerix albiventris, is a species of hedgehog found in sub-Saharan Africa. It is one of the more popular hedgehog species bred in captivity for its beauty and friendly nature.

White-bellied aphroids are relatively small mammals, reaching a body length of 15 to 25 centimetres. Their body is covered with spines that protect them from predators. However, underneath the spines is hidden soft white or cream-coloured fur, which gives them their distinctive appearance. The natural range of the white-bellied afrojee covers areas of sub-Saharan Africa, including countries such as Nigeria, Cameroon, Central African Republic, South Sudan and others. They inhabit a variety of habitats, including grassy areas, forests and urbanised areas.  White-bellied aphroids are nocturnal animals, meaning that they are active at night and sleep during the day. In the wild, they emerge from their hiding places after dark to hunt for insects, crustaceans, snails and other small invertebrates. Their diet includes a variety of food sources, depending on availability in the environment. They may consume insects, fruit, seeds, bird eggs and lizards.
